It’s been a while since the last post! But I have been micro-blogging 🙂

Recently I attended ascilite 2014 – a conference that brings together many people who are passionate about education technology. There were many fascinating key note speakers, really interesting presentations, posters, seminars, workshops… the list just goes on! And of course, great food, in a spectacular location in the deep south of NZ – Dunedin. It was definitely worth the trip! You can read more about the conference reflections on my main blog (if you wish) but here, I’d like to mention the possible collaboration for ascilite 2015, with a fellow Education Developer, who also happens to have an English language teaching background.

One of the best things about attending conferences is meeting new people! Where else would you meet like-minded people, who are just as fascinated about your field (if not more), and are willing to participate in future collaborative projects?

One of those people was Gordon Campbell @g0rd0n who made an insightful presentation on ‘Painless grammar for native speakers ‘ 🙂 It was a very entertaining, insightful and clever presentation indeed!  What he has created was an interactive web site to check and test your grammar knowledge, but without getting overwhelmed with the meta language of grammar. You see, most language learners will be able to tell you the difference between a prepositional phrase that has future past tense and a conjunctive that comes after an infinitive. But it takes quite sometime to internalise that knowledge and apply it appropriately, i.e. speak English fluently. So how would you go about showing grammar ‘rules’ to a native speaker who has internalised the language since birth? If you wish to know more about it, you’ll need to contact Gordon 🙂

During one of the presentations, we caught up. We talked about the possibility of seeing the albatross colony on the Dunedin peninsula. Then the conversation continued onto LiveCode somehow (surprise, surprise!). I jokingly said that he may actually like using it for his grammar practice tool, and we may even collaborate on a project to present at the next ascilite conference! I was only joking!!! He replied on twitter saying how much he was enjoying the new drag’n’drop coding language and that he’d be keen to work on a concise paper together for 2015! Argh, how do I get myself into these things?? Really?

I’m chuffed, actually! It is so hard to keep my motivation levels going when I’m learning LiveCode on my own. But if I have a study buddy, I think it’s achievable. You can push each other, ask silly questions, and show off all the silly apps you can create 😉

As for the concise paper, hmmm? My original plan was to teach LiveCode to speakers of other languages, who are learning English. The coding language uses simple English as lines of instruction so it’s actually possible. Don’t take my word for it, give it a try! It’s free and open source software (the community version). As for me, I think I’ll wait until next year – just too far to travel at the moment 😉

I’d like to point out that I’m not affiliated with RunRev in any way. I just happen to like its product, LiveCode, because I can actually get on with teaching languages the way my students would like to learn.

In other words, I can actually practise student-centred education with minimum time to prepare my lesson plans. LiveCode gives me the freedom to be the teacher I want to be by enabling me (that’s right “me”) to learn how to code  in no time and develop apps for my learners.

The next step will be teaching my students how to code – watch this space 🙂
